Pre-war studio portrait of 757 Lance Corporal Carl Wilhelm Janssen, 5th Battalion from Mentone, Victoria. A 26 year old engraver prior to enlisting on 18 August 1914, he embarked for overseas with G Company from Melbourne on 21 October 1914 aboard HMAT Orvieto. Landing at Gallipoli with the battalion, he was wounded in action, dying of his wounds on 26 April 1915. He was buried at sea and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave. His younger brother, 359 Private Ernek Valdemar Janssen also served at Gallipoli with the 5th Battalion and was killed in action on 8 May 1915. [See image H05578.]
