Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Leslie William Elliott, 5th Battalion. A clerk prior to enlistment, 2nd Lt Elliott embarked with the 12th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Ceramic on 23 November 1915. In March 1916 in Egypt he transferred to C Company, 57th Battalion, before embarking for service on the Western Front. Following promotions to the rank of Lieutenant then Captain (Capt), on 24 September 1918 he was awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for 'conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty' while leading B Company, 57th Battalion, at Villers Bretonneux. On 31 December 1918 he was Mentioned in Despatches during attacks on the Hindenburg Line. Capt Elliot returned to Australia on 10 June 1919.
