When You Can't Dig Down
Jeff Dennis of 5RAR
second tour, standing behind his combined weapon pit and sleeping
accommodation. The 5RAR Diggers and Australian infantrymen in
general, when manning the defensive perimeter of a fire support base
always dug weapon pits to be manned in the event of an attack. In
this photograph it was a very short stay and there was no time to
dig so the soldiers utilised galvanised iron culverts with heavy
sand bagging to do the job. Jeff's 'mozzy net' can be seen in the
left culvert and his 'tin hat' sitting on sand bags. These were
carried if there was a likely hood of a VC mortar attack.
