RAAF iroquois helicopters transporting men of 5RAR RAAF 'Hueys"

RAAF Hueys in formation carrying 5RAR soldiers into battle. This photograph was taken by Bob Hobbs from his seat during the battalion's 2nd tour.

The Iroquois helicopter was the lifeline of the Vietnam war. Not only were they air transport carrying Diggers to and from their areas of operations but also carried in food, water and supplies.

The 'Dustoff' Huey was the reason why the death toll was not higher during the war as it could quickly load a wounded soldier and transport him to the 1st Aust Field Hospital or the American 36th Evacuation Hospital both located at Vung Tau.
