Engineer Field Troops (Tunnel Rats)

Specially trained in demolition and mine warfare, engineers supported the battalion on all operations. Mini combat teams of two men were allocated to each company and assisted the infantry in detection and neutralisation of mines, booby traps and tunnels.
Combat teams of eight Sappers were on immediate call for particular tasks such as clearing minefields, blowing or seeding enemy bunker systems or blowing landing zones for helicopters.

At all times support from these men were such that no group from any supporting arm was held in higher esteem by the 'Grunts'.
