South Vietnamese Sentry Box

South Vietnamese Sentry Box 1969

A typical sentry box used by the South Vietnamese Army Popular Forces (PF) and Regional Forces (RF) units in their defensive compounds within villages and hamlets. The PF were South Vietnamese government territorial troops, locally recruited to protect the villages. They were of platoon size and were under the control of village or district chiefs. The RF were recruited from within their province and had provincial military responsibilities. They were of company size and were under the control of the provincial chief. These units were colloquially known by the Aussies, as the Ruff-Puff, a play on the initials RF/PF.
