Throw Smoke!

Coloured Smoke was used by friendly ground forces to mark their position. 'Victor-Charlie' would sometimes throw smoke to confuse the pilot. The pilot would call the colour seen and friendly ground forces would confirm the colour so the pilot wouldn't be loured into a trap.
