Terry Tommasi of 5RAR filling his water bottles during a 5RAR TAOR patrol Water Point 1st Tour

Terry Tommasi of C Company (facing camera) can be seen refilling his water bottles during his platoon's TAOR (Tactical Area of Responsibility) patrol.

The streams and rivers of Vietnam carried many water-borne diseases so it was important to de-contaminate your drinking water by adding a chlorine tablet to each bottle, giving the bottle a good shake then let it stand for 20 minutes before adding a tablet to remove the chlorine taste from the water.

Often, there was a lack of 'de-tasting' tablets (neutralise the chlorine taste) so the 5RAR soldier would be forced to drink the water chlorinated ... it was like drinking from a swimming pool.
