Major
Ivor Hodgkinson was commissioned into the
Australian Regular Army in 1953 and has
served in Korea and Malaysia with The Royal
Australian Regiment. as well as holding
staff and instructional appointments. He
arrived in Vietnam, during December 1966 and
was posted to 5th Battalion, The Royal
Australian Regiment.
Major Hodgkinson served as Second in Command
of the 5th Battalion during its last five
months in Vietnam and on several occasions,
during the absence of his Commanding
Officer, successfully commanded the
Battalion during operations
On two such occasions, the 5th Battalion was
engaged on cordon and search operations and
Major Hodgkinson's careful planning,
attention to detail and capable leadership
ensured their complete success.
The techniques which he developed so
successfully during these two operations
have been accepted as standard procedures in
the 1st Australian Task Force.
During his final three months with the
Battalion, Major Hodgkinson performed the
duties of Operations Officer in addition to
those of Second in Command. His enthusiasm,
loyalty and industry under difficult and
trying conditions were an inspiration to all
those who had the good fortune to serve with
him.
Major Hodgkinson's professional ability,
detailed operational and administrative
planning and tireless drive contributed
directly to the success achieved by the 5th
Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment on
operations, during the period of December
1966 to April 1967. |
