Matthew P. Linton

When Matthew Linton was conscripted in 1968,
The carpet layer from Sydney didn't hesitate.
He signed on in July and completed basic training
Then by Feb '69 to South Vietnam he was sailing.

He was part of the Tiger Battalion also known as 5RAR
His role as a signalman saw him as a rising star.
Having sworn to serve his country he did his duty well.
The conditions in this country could be described as hell.

Just like all the others, Matthew took it in his stride
But on November 4 in Bien Hoa, this fine young soldier died.
During 'Operation Kings Cross' he was killed in the front line.
Matthew was just 22 years old and taken far before his time!
